Intro to Contemporary Tapestry

Since the inventions of the Bauhaus weavers of the 1950s, tapestry has transformed in many ways. A new era of abstract, highly textured woven artwork has emerged and continues to evolve. In this 5-week course, students will learn essential techniques of contemporary forms of woven fibre art to create exciting artwork with 3-dimensional elements. Students will create a medium-sized tapestry over the course of five weeks. You will learn how to: • Warp a loom • Tabby/plain weave • Create 3-dimensional textures using yarn and other fibres (silk, cotton, wool roving, etc.) • Blend colours • Finish your project This class is for beginners, no prior experience required. All materials provided. Accessibility and Program Notes: • This program takes place at the NeighbourSpace which is an accessible venue at 708 Douglas Street. • Please refrain from wearing or using strong-scented products while attending this program. • Sensory Considerations: We will be working with wool, cotton and silk fibres. If you have allergies, please let us know. • Tapestry weaving requires significant hand and wrist movement.
