Intro to Traditional Tapestry

In this 5-week course, students will learn the essential skills that tapestry weavers have been using for thousands of years to create beautiful textile artwork. This class will focus on the "pick and pick" style of tapestry weaving, using multiple strands of yarn to create enticing colours that give depth and dimension to woven work. Students will create a medium-sized tapestry over the course of five weeks. You will learn how to: • Warp a loom • Tabby/plain weave • Create shapes and texture through hatching/interlock techniques • Blend colours • Finish your project This class is for beginners, no prior experience required. All materials provided. Accessibility and Program Notes: • Please refrain from wearing or using strong-scented products while attending this program. • Sensory Considerations: We will be working with wool, cotton and silk fibres. If you have allergies, please let us know. • Tapestry weaving requires significant hand and wrist movement.
